The Role
The Supervision Team plays an important role in ensuring that regulatory standards in the barrister profession are maintained, as well as in enabling the BSB to foster a constructive relationship with those we regulate and other stakeholders.
We are responsible for supervising barristers and the chambers or companies that they work in, as well as the organisations that the BSB authorises to deliver the vocational Bar training courses and pupillage. We do this by carrying out thematic reviews and by responding to reports made to the BSB that raise regulatory concerns. Our focus is on those that present highest risk to the BSB’s Regulatory Objectives, in the public interest and the interest of consumers. The work is varied and interesting and involves engaging with a wide range of people and organisations. The team is collaborative and supportive, whether working from the office or at home. Members of the team work to a range of flexible arrangements.
We are recruiting an additional Senior Regulatory Officer to increase the capacity and capability of the Supervision Team, particularly in relation to our supervision of the vocational Bar training providers. We particularly welcome applications from people with a background in a quality assurance role in higher or further education.
The Senior Regulatory Officer’s key responsibilities will be to:
*
Gather and analyse information to support the assessment of risk.
*
Conduct supervision visits, approximately 5-6 per year, to monitor and ensure training providers comply with our regulations.
*
Work with our team of external examiners, who oversee the standards of assessments set by the Bar course providers.
*
Conduct thematic reviews on areas of focus in our strategic plans.
*
Work closely with colleagues on areas of regulatory policy development.
*
Respond promptly and effectively to reports to the BSB from stakeholders including barristers, pupils, members of the public and other regulators, related to risk and compliance matters.
Key skills and experience required to undertake the role include to:
*
Communicate confidently and professionally, orally and in writing, with a range of internal and external stakeholders, building relationships.
*
Proven experience in risk assessment, compliance or in a related role
*
Experience in the regulation of further, higher or professional education is desirable.
